MEET MARK VOYTON: JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE INTEGRATED SCIENCE INSTRUMENT MODULE DEPUTY MANAGER

Mark Voyton is the Deputy Manager for the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) on the James Webb Space Telescope (Webb telescope) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. |
Since February of 2008, he has worked as the Deputy. In his position, he works closely with the ISIM Manager as well as the Senior Webb telescope management team to provide management guidance and direction for ISIM development, integration and test activities, issues, budgets, and recovery plans as required.
Prior to this position, Voyton served as the Webb telescope Data System Manager. As the Data System Manager, he managed the operational requirements, research, analysis, integrations, and evaluation of aeronautical flight data systems for payloads and observatory which interfaced directly to the launch vehicle. It was here that he worked directly with the Webb telescope Observatory Manager as well as the ISIM Manager.
From September 2002 to July 2004, Mark served as the ISIM C&DH Technical Manager. In this role, he led the design and development of the ISIM Command and Data Handling (ICDH) system as a member of the Flight Data Systems and Radiations Effects Branch.
Mark started on Webb telescope in January 2002 functioning as the Chief Systems Engineer for the ISIM C&DH system. Prior to this, Mark was the Baseband Department Manager for Hughes Networks Systems in Germantown, where he managed a team of engineers and technicians through the design, development and delivery of the International Maritime Satellite ground system.
Mark served as the Associate Branch Head of the Flight Electronics Branch from 1999-2000, where he supervised a team of electrical engineers and technicians developing C&DH sub-systems. From 1994-1998, Mark was an electronics engineer at Goddard in the Flight Electronics Branch. In this position, he designed and developed C&DH hardware for space flight applications.
From 1985 to 1994 Mark worked as an engineer in the private sector for Martin Marietta, General Dynamics and Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
Voyton received his Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering Science from Loyola College, and his master’s degree in Technical Management from Johns Hopkins University. He and his wife Lynn live in Clarksville with their son and daughter. Mark’s hobbies include spending time on the soccer field with Nick and Jen, going to the beach and woodworking when time permits.
